Airborne 03.06.19: Fake Airline Pilot, Gary Airshow, Hoover Foundation

Also: Gone West-WASP Kay Gunderson, NASA To Study Space Weather, Sikorsky HH-60W, Aero-TV: DJI’s Mightiest Mavic, Pt 2

It sounds like the barely believable plot to a movie. But, a pilot working for South African Airways for over two decades is being charged with fraud, when it was discovered that he was not properly licensed to fly in scheduled airline service. William Chandler started flying for South African Airways (SSA) back in 1994.

Somehow, though, he got away with coming on board with only a commercial certificate and not the ATP required by South Africa's CAA -- Though, some reports indicate that he did present a forged ATP at some point over the years. Chandler managed to avoid scrutiny for years by allegedly refusing promotion to Captain and remaining a First Officer throughout his career thereby avoiding the upgrade training and processes that would have accompanied such a move. The aviation world continues to have a tough time getting its message across, here and there, and one of the most important ways it can do is via the network of airshows that cover the country each year. BUT... the airshow business can be a tough gig. In its heyday, the three-day Gary airshow was a major event... drawing as many as many as 600,000 to the Lake Michigan lakefront... and featured major acts such as the Golden Knights, USAF Thunderbirds, and countless well-known aerobatic performers. But, the event has been on hold since 2016 and will be grounded yet again for 2019. The Organizers had hoped to bring it back, but the bucks needed for 2019 are not to be found. The Bob Hoover Legacy Foundation (BHLF), under the guidance of President Tracy Forrest and Chairman Michael Herman; has appointed an Executive Director to handle the growing mission entrusted it by the late Robert A. ‘Bob’ Hoover. In concert with Board members, George Gould, Brian Cochran, Joan Cochran, James G. Kidrick and Rich Pickett; Hoover friend and associate, ANN’s Jim Campbell, is now serving as the Foundation’s new Executive Director. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
