Supplier Provides Rotax 916 iS Firewall-Forward Kit to the Van's RV-9A

Lockwood Aviation Supply has designed the Rotax 916iS firewall-forward engine package for Van's Aircraft RV-9A. This improvement turns the already capable RV-9A into an impressive cross-country machine, exhibited for the first time at this year's EAA Oshkosh AirVenture.

The Rotax 916 iS is a pretty sporty, 160-horsepower turbocharged engine. Best of all, it has a 5-year, 2,000-hour warranty. Due to its modern design and having an engine that is 80lbs lighter as opposed to the original engines that are typically in there. The lesser weight alone makes a big difference, but it also requires moving the chord line and the wings slightly aft to adjust for the center of gravity. By adjusting the CG, it made it possible to utilize the full 100lb limit baggage compartment within limits.

Regarding performance, the cruise speeds are up by 10 to 40 knots, depending on altitude. Takeoffs are shorter, and climb performance, especially at high-density altitudes, is noticeably better. Plus, the engine runs more efficiently with an automatic lean-of-peak EGT operation, making long trips easier on the wallet and simpler to manage in the cockpit.

The 916iS also features a dry sump oil system with a separate oil tank and an air-to-air intercooler, further increasing reliability and high-altitude performance. With its excellent power-to-weight ratio and modern electronic systems, this engine was primarily a paper thought/ design, but Lockwood Aviation President Phil Lockwood decided to make it real. It was designed with both performance and efficiency in mind.
