Classic Aero-TV: Rainbow Aviation's EMG-6 - The Cutest Motor Glider

At EAA AirVenture 2016 We Found Flying Ultralights Is Fun, and Cute Is a Bonus…

While at EAA AirVenture 2016, ANN’s, Earl Downs, headed to the south end of the Wittman Regional Airport where the ultralights hang out. This part of AirVenture, also referred to as the ‘fun zone,’ displays some great aircraft that represent the epitome of recreational aviation.

Earl stopped to talk with Brian Carpenter, who is the owner of Rainbow Aviation Services and its subdivision, Adventure Aircraft. One of the aircraft they had on display was being referred to as a Motor Glider, and it was about as cute as they get. Carpenter said they call the aircraft the EMG-6, but its name is “Sparky.” Sparky has strobe lights on the nose that are made to look like eyes, which give the illusion that this little airplane is looking at you and smiling.

While the aircraft began its life as a glider, it can be transitioned to both gasoline and electric power versions. The end product is designed to be for the person that loves to fly but who doesn’t care how long it takes to go anywhere - or nowhere.

In the video you’ll see lots of scenes of this aircraft in flight that will clearly display the various ways it can be operated. In some iterations it is legal as an FAR 103 ultralight and in others it is not; it simply gives the builder of the aircraft a choice. The fun of flying shines in this video.
