Wyoming Valley RC Club Not Stymied By UAV Regs

But Members Do Not Fly 'Drones', Club Says

Recent changes in FAA rules do not seem to have slowed down the Wyoming Valley RC Flyers Club in Northern PA.

The Times Leader newspaper reports that the club, which is sanctioned by the AMA, meets once weekly to fly RC aircraft. It includes members ranging in age from 18 to 84 years old.

And while the club's members fly a variety of different aircraft, they don't fly quadcopters or other aircraft commonly called "drones" according to the report.

That doesn't mean they're opposed to those types of aircraft. Club president Larry Wright told the paper that as long as the person operating the aircraft is a club member, has an insurance card, and flies according to AMA rules, they would be welcome.

Wright said that the club has permission to fly their aircraft at Moon Lake Park, which is owned by the state of Pennsylvania.

But personal UAVs are banned in some nearby areas, such as the Montage Mountain Ski Resort. The resort's director of marketing said that they have their own drones which are used to scout for safety issues. But a person flying a UAV at the resort can lose his or her skiing or snowboarding privileges, and the aircraft can be confiscated, she said.
