Aero-TV: Redbird's Roger Sharp -- Pushing The Aero-Educational Envelope

One of GenAv's Most Experienced CFIs Discusses The Latest News In Flight Training, Part 1

While at the Redbird Migration 2014, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, met with Redbird’s Roger Sharp, the director of training for Redbird Flight Simulations.

In this part 1 of a 2-part interview, Campbell asked what Redbird has learned since the last Redbird Migration a year ago?

Sharp started his conversation by listing things that already existed but were validated, such as, can a flight simulator be applied to primary training? The answer was, of course it can. By integrating the flight simulator at an early stage of student training they found that students learned quickly to integrate the various tasks required of a pilot. Of course, repeatability of simulator maneuvers in a short period of time is also highly valuable.

However, he continued, they also learned some things not to do. Sharp pointed out that they were not getting the practical exams first-time pass rates that they wanted. Part of this, he believes, was the over saturation in the simulator of information that was not retained. This realization resulted in a revision to the curriculum to make non-simulator ground training more prevalent.

The conversation continued to discuss training curriculums and the thought patterns behind them, and how flight simulation factors into the whole process. Redbird is on the cutting edge of pilot training, and this video provides interesting insight to where training is headed.
