AMA Drone Report 03.05.20: HUGE RID NPRM Response, AMA's Eval, RID-Now What?

Also: DJI Urges FAA To Reconsider, EAA To FAA: RID Overreach, Elon Musk On Future Fighters, UAV Pilots Picket FAA

Wow... just wow. The last count we have for the number of responses to the FAA’s poorly thought-out Remote ID NPRM now stands at an astounding 52,943... which may be a record... but we can't get the FAA to tell us if it is... or isn’t.

It’s an astounding number and will require the Feds to undertake MONTHS of study to read through them all, catalog the trending data, and prepare a proper summary for the FAA to examine as they undertake the final rule-making process. A few things come to mind, though, IF the feds do their job properly, there is NO WAY that they can wade through all these responses, study them carefully, and present them to the powers-that-be in anything less than several months... especially when looking at response times from previous high-response NPRMs. Just prior to the March 2nd Deadline, AMA weighed in the Remote ID NPRM with their official stance. In their extensive response, the AMA notes that, “According to the NPRM, the FAA states that requiring Remote ID technologies would address safety, national security, and law enforcement concerns regarding further integration of these aircraft into the National Airspace System (NAS) of the United States. AMA members support the safe and secure operation of all UAS–commercial and recreational–in the NAS. For more than 80 years, AMA members have been safely operating in the NAS–a fact repeatedly and publicly acknowledged by the FAA. However, the proposed rules do not improve the safety or security of model aircraft activities, but rather only impose unnecessary and costly regulations to the one part of the UAS community with existing safety and security standards in place.“ AMA has completed its campaign to make sure that the FAA’s underwhelming Remote ID NPRM but it has already notified its membership that the fight is far from over, “...please know there is still a long road ahead. In fact, there is a lengthy bureaucratic process that the FAA must complete before a final rule is announced, including a review of each of the tens of thousands of comments you submitted. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
