Pilot Lost As Dutch F-16 Goes Down In Afghanistan

Officials Believe Accident, Not Shootdown, To Blame

A Dutch pilot is dead after his F-16 crashed in southern Afghanistan Thursday.

"The plane was flying at a great height when the accident occurred, which means it can be ruled out that the craft was shot down. We therefore assume it was an accident," the Dutch defense ministry said.

The 29-year old pilot is the third Dutchman to die in Afghanistan this year. Two others were among 12 killed in a July helicopter crash.

Thursday's crash site was found in the southern province of Ghazni... where the fighter was supporting a NATO ground unit. The downed aircraft was found by a US search-and-rescue team.
