AKIA Elects New Officers

Jeremy Monnett Tapped As President During Meeting Held At AirVenture

The Aircraft Kit Industry Association (AKIA) announced that Jeremy Monnett, president of Sonex Aircraft (pictured), was elected president at the recent AKIA annual meeting held during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014. Dick VanGrunsven, president of Van’s Aircraft, will serve as vice president, and John McBean, owner of Kitfox Aircraft, is the new secretary/treasurer.

AKIA also heard from Charlie Becker, EAA director of communities and homebuilt community manager, regarding the organization’s future plans for accommodating homebuilts at AirVenture. All of the AKIA members expressed strong support for EAA’s hosting of the One Week Wonder project at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Mark Giron of the FAA spoke about the agency’s interest in improving transition training by simplifying the LODA process that allows for training in homebuilt aircraft. The change would allow builders an opportunity to purchase instruction in an aircraft that is identical or similar to the one they are building. The FAA is also looking at allowing a second pilot to participate in Phase One flight testing of homebuilts to enhance safety.
