Search Continues For Rumored Downed Aircraft In Delaware

Early Reports Plane Belonged To NASCAR Driver Prove False

Officials at Delaware's Dover Air Force Base reported hearing a radio tower transmission Monday morning about 8:30 am, indicating a plane in distress near a body of water. But no aircraft were visible on controllers' radar at the time.

Delaware State Police, the Civil Air Patrol and local fire departments are assisting the Coast Guard with the search, spokesperson Cpl. Wes Barnett told the Delmar (MD) Daily Times.

According to Barnett, searches combed area lakes and waterways including the Delaware Bay. "At this point, investigators have found no witnesses or any evidence to suggest that an airplane crashed in the area," Barnett said.

"We've searched throughout the (Kent) county. ... We haven't located anything," Sgt. Joshua A. Bushweller said.

Early media reports said the plane belonged to NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, but Gordon's airplane is sitting safely in its hangar, John Edwards, Gordon's press spokesman, told the Pennsylvania Patriot-News.

Troopers are continuing to search surrounding areas, police said.
