Retired Air Force Officer Hopes To Save Historic Airplane

Boeing 707 Served CENTCOM During Operation Iraqi Freedom

A Boeing 707 that saw service during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a transport for top brass is slated to be scrapped ... unless some $200,000 can be raised to transport it to a museum.

That is the hope of retired Air Force Lt. Col. Gerald Roark, who was one of the pilots of the airplane during the period. He told Fox News that Roark would like to see the 707 transported to Aviation Heritage Park in Bowling Green, KY, where he works. It is currently on display at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, GA, which says it can no longer afford to keep the plan on display.

But the museum in Kentucky can't afford the $200,000 price tag to disassemble the airplane and have it shipped 400 miles.

Roark said that there is no cost-effective way to transport the plane to Kentucky, at least from the museum's perspective.

If it is not able to be saved, the 707, which served both Generals Norman Schwarzkopf during Iraqi Freedom and Tommy Franks following the September 11 terrorist attacks, will be scrapped by the Air Force.
