South African Woman Reportedly Cut In Half By Landing Airplane

One Of Three Women Crossing An Active Runway

A Mooney airplane landing at South Africa's Ermelo airport reportedly hit a woman who was one of three taking a shortcut across the airport's active runway. The accident is said to have cut the woman in two.

South African television News 24 reports that the woman was struck by the Mooney's left wing, according to Police spokesperson Captain Carla Prinsloo. He said the women were apparently picking up wood at a nearby plantation.

The pilot of the Mooney was unhurt in the incident, which is under investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority. The plane sustained damage to its wing and landing gear.

One pilot said on an online bulletin board that locals had put up ladders on both sides of the airport fence to be able to cut across the airfield, which they do regularly.
