Beautiful Boulder Drone Video Is Also Illegal

Operator Flew Over Many Areas He Should Not Have To Capture Images

A video produced by a native of Boulder, CO as an homage to his hometown is reportedly stunning.

It's also mostly illegal.

The drone operator is Kjell Redal. He and his sister flew over some of the city's most scenic and interesting places over the course of six days to capture their images. The got shots of Pearl Street and the University of Colorado-Boulder, plus images of the Flatiron Mountains at sunrise.

But after posting the video on Vimeo, and getting tens of thousands of views in three days, it was noted that nearly all of the shots he got were actually illegal, according to a report from television station KUSA. For instance, drones cannot be flown over the CU Boulder campus without permission, and the city of Boulder and the county have rules prohibiting the launch and recovery of UAVs from property owned by the city or county.

It's not reported whether Redal and his sister will face any repercussions from their flights, but city and county officials both said that drone operators should be sure they are familiar with all local and FAA rules and regulations before they fly.
