New Crew Arrives At Space Station

Marks Return To Flight For Soyuz Spacecraft Following Launch Abort In October

The Soyuz MS-11 with the Expedition 58 crew aboard launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station at 6:31 a.m. EST Monday, docking at the station a about six hours later.

NASA astronaut Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, and Oleg Konenenko of the Russian space agency Roscosmos will live and work on the orbiting outpost for the next six-and-a-half months.

Just days after their arrival, the crew members will capture the SpaceX Dragon cargo resupply spacecraft set to launch Tuesday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and deliver more than 5,800 pounds of critical research and supplies.

This is the first flight for both McClain and Saint-Jacques and the fourth for Kononenko.

The crew members will continue work on hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science aboard the International Space Station, humanity’s only permanently occupied microgravity laboratory.

NASA and the Canadian Space Agency worked closely with Russian space officials and station program partner Roscosmos to move forward on plans to launch the crew, completing a series of reviews including the station program’s Flight Readiness Review.
