Alitalia Suspends All Flights In And Out Of Malpensa Airport In Milan

Region Is On Lockdown Due To The Covid-19 Virus

With much of northern Italy on lockdown due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19), Alitalia has suspended all flights into and out of Malpensa Airport in Milan as of Monday.

The carrier is also reducing the number of flights from other cities in northern Italy. Only domestic routes will be served from Milan's regional airport, Linate, during the lockdown.

International Flight Network reports that many airlines have suspended all flights or cut routes in the region in an effort to curb the spread of the Coronavirus, including American Airlines, Delta, SAS Scandinavian, Turkish Airlines and Singapore Airlines.

Milan Malpensa is one of two main hubs for Alitalia in Italy, the other being Rome Fiumicino. It operates long-haul flights from both airports. The Coronavirus outbreak has raised questions about the ability of Alitalia to survive the crises. The carrier has struggled to remain profitable for years.

Globally, airlines are being negatively affected by flight reductions due to the disease, and U.S. airline stocks have suffered significant losses since the outbreak became more widespread.
