New Airplanes On The Way For The Blue Angels

Upgraded F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets Ordered From Boeing

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a contract valued at $17 million to Boeing for 11 new aircraft for the Blue Angels.

The order is for the retrofit documentation and kits to convert nine F/A-18E and two F/A-18F Super Hornets into a Blue Angel configuration

Work will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri, and is expected to be completed in December 2021.  Fiscal 2018 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $17,002,107 will be obligated at time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

Defense Blog reports that the Blue Angels have flown F/A-18 A, B, C and D variants for 30 years, longer than the team has used any other aircraft. The E and F models are 20 percent larger and have 40 percent more range than the C/D aircraft.
