Air India Strike Ended By Court Decision, 15 Workers Let Go

About 100 Flights Were Cancelled Due To Labor Action

Workers represented by the Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) are back on the job after 15 workers were fired and a Delhi High Court ordered the strike be suspended.

Two of the 14 unions representing workers for the Air India walked off the job Tuesday. The strike was at least in part due to a "gag order" on the part of Air India preventing employees from speaking to the media about the recent accident in Mangalore. Workers also said the order precluded them from speaking to the press about safety issues, or problems with suspended pay. The airline is still reeling from thr accident in which 158 people were killed. IBNLive.com reports that the Prime Ministers Office gave Air India management a "clear mandate" to take what action was necessary to get the situation under control, after which the airline fired 15 employees.

While union representatives said they were suspending the strike because "management had come to an understanding of our demands," IBN reports that the Delhi High Court ordered that the strike be called off because the National Aviation Company of India LTD said it was illegal, and was causing a great deal of inconvenience for passengers. The Court ruled that workers had to return to their jobs, and that they are barred from going on strike after May 31.
