Drones and Drone Racing are a thing. There's no denying it, and the AMA is working to embrace this new segment of the RC Community.

Rich Hanson, president of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, told Aero-News CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at AirVenture in July that along with the semi-professional events such as those staged by the Drone Racing League, many local AMA chapters are staging their own drone racing events, and it is bringing more young people into the RC aviation community.

Multi-rotor flying brings together aeronautics, computer science and robotics, Hanson said, a combination that is energizing and creating a lot of enthusiasm with youth, which is something the hobby really needs.

AMA Executive Director Dave Mathewson, told Campbell that the model and RC aircraft hobby is headed in the right direction. There will always be new technologies, and five years from now, there will be something that takes the place of multi-rotors and drones, and the association looks forward to that.
