Ukraine Helo Accident Claims 19

One Survives Crash Near Offshore Oil Rig

At least 19 oil workers were killed Monday when their helicopter crashed into the Black Sea.

Ukrainian officials told CNN International the Mi-8 (type shown above), operated by state gas company Naftogaz, was attempting to land on an offshore oil rig at 0630 GMT when it ditched into the sea.

"An Mi-8 helicopter with 20 people on board clipped the Tavrida platform with its tail rotor, and as a result 19 people died and one survived," Naftogaz spokesman Ilya Savin told Reuters.

Monday's mishap is the second in the past month involving a Ukrainian Mi-8. Twelve members of the country's border guard were lost when their Mi-8 crashed into the Black Sea on March 28.

In service since 1961, the Russian Mi-8 is a workhorse aircraft, used throughout the former Soviet Union in both civilian and military applications.
