Airborne 04.30.14: CAF Does Dallas, SpaceX Sues Uncle Sam, AOPA $175K Kiddy Park

Also: Jepp Loses Lawsuit, Para-Phernalia, Melbourne AirShow, McWherter Bails Out of Tailhook

The Big “D” is about to get its own Air Force! The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) just announced its selection of Dallas Executive Airport as the location for their CAF National Airbase and corporate Headquarters. The CAF will move a few initial staff in 2014, with the full operations of its Headquarters arriving in Dallas by the end of 2015.

SpaceX has filed a legal challenge to the U.S. Air Force’s latest Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) contract with United Launch Alliance (ULA). The long-term contract, which guarantees the purchase of 36 rocket cores to be used in national security launches was granted to ULA on a sole-source basis without any competition from other launch providers. SpaceX is seeking the right to compete for some of these same launches. AOPA Members may be getting another fundraising pitch in their mailboxes soon. The association went before the Frederick, Maryland airport commission last week to pitch an idea they say would make Frederick Municipal Airport a friendlier place and show a more positive image of GA to the local community. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
