Aero-TV: Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In Readies for 49th Anniversary

1974-2023

Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo (stylized SUN 'n FUN) is a Lakeland, Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to the promotion of aviation education. The organization is best known for its annual fly-in—which is considered by pilots and aviation aficionados to be early spring’s premier airshow and weeklong hootenanny.

In 2014, Sun ‘n Fun introduced the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), a 14-building aerospace STEM facility located on the Sun ‘n Fun’s Expo Campus. Among the most unique educational cooperatives in the United States, ACE includes an Aerospace Pavilion; the Florida Air Museum; the Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA) High School; the Lakeland Aero Club—a high school flying club; the Piedmont Experience—a Boeing 727 classroom; the Piedmont Hangar; the Tom Davis Education Center; the Buehler Restoration Center; and the Crossfield Discovery Center.

The ACE staff—by dint of the aforementioned facilities—provides aerospace-themed summer camps and outreach programs to over thirty-thousand students annually. Children enrolled in subject programs may avail themselves of learning activities ranging from stomp rockets and balsa gliders to real aircraft construction and maintenance programs. What’s’ more, ACE’s educator assistance programs provide STEM-based curriculum and lesson-plans to teachers at all grade levels.

2023 will mark the 49th anniversary of the Sun ‘n Fun fly in. The theme of the 28 March through 02 April event—Capture the Magic of Aviation—speaks compellingly to ACE’s founding principles, and affirms the aspirations of the youthful legions who’ve proceeded from the institution’s classrooms to rewarding careers throughout the aviation industry.
