Hole in Fuselage Means Emergency Landing For NWA Flight

Syracuse-to-Detroit Flight Lands At BUF Friday

You know something's up when the oxygen masks drop, and it probably isn't good.

But for the 95 people aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 1411 Friday, it ended as well as could be hoped for when their Detroit-bound flight landed safely at BUF due to the loss of cabin pressure and a smoke-filled cockpit, reported the Associated Press. No one was injured in the incident.

"We just took off and were probably in the air for 20 minutes," said one man, "and they said we just lost cabin pressure and all the masks dropped down."

"They told us that they smelled smoke … when the masks dropped down and we were going to make an emergency landing in Buffalo," said another passenger.

Following the emergency landing of the DC-9, during which the airport went on alert, a foot-long hole in the fuselage was discovered, officials at the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority said.

NWA said it was conducting an internal review.

The airline brought in another plane from Detroit, and passengers arrived in Detroit from Buffalo at 6:15 pm, no oxygen masks needed.
