Gone West: Alaska Pilot And Noted Attorney Robert Hall Wagstaff

Was President Of The U.S. Aerobatic Foundation For Eight Years

Aero-News has learned of the passing of Alaska Attorney Robert Hall Wagstaff, who was also well known in the aviation community both in Alaska and nationwide.

According to an obituary published in The Alaska News Dispatch, Wagstaff relocated from Kansas to Alaska in 1967 to work for the Alaska Attorney General in Fairbanks. He later moved to Anchorage and opened a practice as a trial lawyer and appellate advocate. He appeared twice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Wagstaff also began flying in 1967, with ratings in single- and multi-engine aircraft, seaplanes, helicopters and jets. One of his favorites was the Douglas DC-3, which he described as "the ultimate taildragger." He often flew to remote villages in Alaska to meet with clients. He left Alaska in 2002 to pursue a postgraduate law degree in London at the University of Oxford.

Wagstaff served as President of the United States Aerobatic Foundation for eight years, as a Member of the Airspace Committee, Alaska Airman's Association for three years, and was a recipient of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale Air Sports Medal in 1991.

Wagstaff passed away on October 8th at his home in Carmel, CA. He was 77 years old.
