Gulfstream Furloughs 1,000 Workers

Economic Ripple Felt Throughout Southeast

For a thousand Gulfstream workers in Savannah (GA), it's an unwanted month off without pay. For many area companies which depend on the aerospace giant for as much as 30 percent of their business, it's an economic tragedy.

Beginning today, those 1000 workers will be idle for about 30 days.

Gulfstream may be down, but it's not out of the jet-making business, according to a company spokesman. The company, struggling with a sluggish aviation economy, will continue to manufacture aircraft.

It will, however, "pause" some manufacturing operations. As for those temporarily furloughed, even though they won't be getting paychecks, the company promises to continue paying their benefits.
