WWII B-24 Gunner to be Buried 81 Years After Being Shot Down

Sergeant Sanford G. Roy’s Remains Were Identified in 2024

A World War II waist gunner who was killed in action in 1944 when his B-24 was shot down in Germany was located and identified in June 2024. He is now set to be buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery on the 81st anniversary of his passing. Tech. Sgt. Sanford Gordon Roy volunteered for the US Army in August 1942 and was assigned to the Army Air Forces.

Analysis: The pilot reported that, shortly after takeoff while on a post-maintenance check flight, the airplane’s fuel pressure gauge began to fluctuate. Subsequently, the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power. ANN's Daily Aero-Term (04.02.25): Go Around

Go Around Instructions for a pilot to abandon his/her approach to landing. Additional instructions may follow. Unless otherwise advised by ATC, a VFR aircraft or an aircraft conducting visual approach should overfly the runway while climbing to traffic pattern altitude and enter the traffic pattern via the crosswind leg. A pilot on an IFR flight plan making an instrument approach should execute the published missed approach procedure or proceed as instructed by ATC; e.g., “Go around” (additional instructions if required).
