More Cutbacks At Boeing

It Isn't Over Yet

Mack the Knife is cruising the employment pool at Boeing once again, this time looking for about 321 more victims. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the factory. Word from Chicago is that Boeing will bring its total layoffs to about 40,000 since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

With falling deliveries between 2002 and 2003, Boeing is eyeing its employment forecast for 2004 with some trepidation. Deeper cuts could be on the way.

That's frustrating to unions associated with the company. "Boeing keeps telling us we're getting close to the bottom," said Bill Dugovich, a spokesman for the Society for Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace. But the problem is, he says, no one's yet defined how far down the bottom really is.
