Airborne 05.26.21: Vintage Oshkosh, Pilots v Belarus, Mirage F1 Accident

Also: FBI v Drone, ALPA Has Concerns, Precision Aviation Group, F-16 Production Line

Notable aircraft anniversaries and gatherings of beautiful airplane types are among the highlights this year as the Vintage Aircraft Association celebrates its 50th anniversary during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021.

Among the featured aircraft in 2021 are Stinsons, commemorating their 100th anniversary held over from 2020, and celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer family, to be joined by other Short Wing Pipers such as the iconic Vagabond, Clipper, Pacer, and Colt. The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) and the European Cockpit Association (ECA) fully share the concerns expressed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regarding the forced landing of Ryanair Flight 4978 in Minsk, Belarus, on 23 May. Pilots are concerned that the intervention of the Belarussian Air Force was enacted for political reasons, in contravention of the Chicago Convention, and amounts to an act of unlawful interference, bearing all the hallmarks of state-sponsored hijacking. A commercially owned and operated Mirage F1 aircraft has been involved in a fatal accident shortly after departure from Nellis Air Force Base, near Las Vegas. Provided to the US Air Force by Draken International, the aircraft's pilot, identified as 43-year-old Nicholas Hunter Hamilton was confirmed to have perished in the accident by the local coroner. The accident took place at approximately 1430, Monday, outside the southern edge of the base -- with the aircraft reportedly carrying the callsign of SNIPER01. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
