Aero-TV: Avidyne’s Dan Schwinn - Staying Ahead Of the Global ADS-B Transition

Maximizing Opportunities Around The ADS-B Transition…

Avidyne Corporation has staked out a leading position in any number of avionics categories, but the company currently is focused in maximizing its opportunities around the global ADS-B transition for surveillance.

That was the assessment given by Dan Schwinn, President and CEO of Avidyne, to ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at Sun 'n Fun in April.

What the company is trying to do, Schwinn said, is use the products it makes for ADS-B as a platform for the connectivity future, so people who do a higher-end upgrade with Avidyne products have quite a future ahead of them for connectivity.

Schwinn said that the initial certification of the IFD 550 by the FAA is "kind of a tease" of what it will eventually be used for. He said that internally, company employees refer to the 550 as a "universal flight display" which could change the basic configuration of the flight deck.

Schwinn said that the company has about 10 times more good ideas on the drawing board than it is actively pursuing. "I don't feel like we're running out of interesting things to do," Schwinn said. He said that the next generation of changes in GA is not going to be incremental. "It will be more of a disruptive change," he said.
