Virginia Fly-In Set For This Weekend

Pilots From Florida To New York Are Expected

The 12th Annual Virginia Regional Festival of Flight is set for this weekend at Suffolk Executive Airport (SFQ) and organizers say even the weather seems to be cooperating.

Event Spokeswoman Dee Whittington tells Aero-News that the "heritage" EAA-style fly-in, which changed its name last year, has a record number and variety of forums and workshops scheduled for this year's event. Included will be sessions on aviation weather, ethanol in fuel, Virginia aviation history, and test flying your homebuilt. Programs for kids include "What makes an airplane fly?" and "What makes a spacecraft fly?", both presented by representatives from NASA. But they could serve as a good overview for adults wanting to learn the basics of aviation as well.

The FAA will also present workshops geared towards pilots flying around the Nations' Capital. "Air Security in the National Capital Region" might have been instructive for those three pilots who "nicked" the prohibited airspace over Camp David last weekend.

The event will also feature static displays, RC model flying, and valuable prizes.

Hours are from 0800 to 1700 Saturday, and 0800 to 1600 Sunday. Said spokeswoman Dee Whittington it "Looks like the weather gods will smile on Suffolk Executive Airport this weekend ... a front is coming through on Friday and leaving us a marvelous weekend, May 30, 31"

Maybe they can send some of that better weather down to Florida and ANN HQ, and get rid of some of this rain (please!).
