Keeping Lancair Pilots Ahead of the Game

Lancair, High Performance Aircraft Training host ground school

High Performance Aircraft Training, in conjunction with Lancair International, Inc. hosted its third Ground School on May 16, 2004 in New Braunsfels, Texas.  The event was attended by 17 people of which six also went through Recurrency Training.

Pete Zaccagino, the president of High Performance Aircraft Training of Flemington, NJ taught the Ground School.  "As insurance companies look at writing policies they are going to start requiring a program like this," said Zaccagino. By attending High Performance Aircraft Training's ground school, course attendees receive vital information that is specific to the Lancair fleet.

A brief discussion at the beginning of the class is given on aerodynamics and how the Lancair aircraft is unique among other aircraft types.  The course goes on to cover stall information on each type of Lancair, situational awareness, accident avoidance, GPS and WAAS, and weather.

"I learned more in 3 hours of Ground School then I did the entire time I was taking flying lessons," states Julie Townsend, a recent attendee.  Pilots since 1980, she and her husband Albert recently purchased a Lancair ES.  Prior to owning their ES, they flew a Cessna 210 for 15 years. Based out of Uvalde (TX), the Townsend's also participated in Recurrency Training.

High Performance Aircraft Training will offer its next course at the annual Labor Day weekend fly-in at the Lancair factory in Redmond, Oregon on Friday, September 3, 2004.  To register for Ground School or Recurrency Training, please contact David Hickman at (727) 512-3449.
