Airborne 02.15.19: Sun Flyer 2, AirVenture Celebrates 747, SnF Drone Show

Also: 'Mars One' Kaput, Embraer Delivers, Hartzell Engine Technologies, Phoenix Skydive Center Wins

Bye Aerospace’s electric Sun Flyer 2 successfully completed the first official flight test with a Siemens electric propulsion motor February 8 at Centennial Airport, south of Denver, CO.

The Sun Flyer family of aircraft, including the 2-seat Sun Flyer 2 and the 4-seat Sun Flyer 4, aim to be the first FAA-certified, practical, all-electric airplanes to serve the flight training and general aviation markets. Siemens will provide electric propulsion systems for the Sun Flyer 2 airplane—the 57 lb.-SP70D motor with a 90kW peak rating (120 HP), and a continuous power setting of up to 70kW (94 HP). The 50th anniversary of the Boeing 747 will be celebrated at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019. The 67th annual EAA fly-in convention is July 22-28 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It is expected that several Boeing 747s will make an appearance at AirVenture during the week, with fly-bys and displays on AirVenture’s showcase Boeing Plaza. It will extend a legacy of the airplane’s appearances at Oshkosh that include jumbo jets from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland in past years. One of the sport aviation world’s premier events has added a drone show to their impressive airshow roster. You may have seen them at the Olympics, and most recently at the Super Bowl. Now, airshow fans at the annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland can look forward to something special – the first public drone light show performance at a Florida airshow. Over 60 of the specialized aerial robots will lift off together, taking flight twice during the week-long event. SUN ‘n FUN organizers are confident that this dazzling multi-colored aerial light display set to music, dubbed the “Star Dance Spectacular,” will be one of this year’s most memorable highlights. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
