Swiss Officials Investigate Reports PC-9 Was Used In Attack On Darfur

Turboprop Trainer Was To Be For Civilian Use Only

Government agencies in Switzerland are trying to determine whether a Swiss-made Pilatus PC-9 sold to the nation of Chad for civilian training use, was pressed into service as a bomber during a weekend attack against rebel positions in the blighted Sudanese province of Darfur.

The Chadian government would only confirm the attack involved two helicopters, and a light aircraft.

"All channels will be activated to clarify exactly what happened," a spokeswoman for the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs told SwissInfo.

Chad also has two PC-7s, a less powerful predecessor of the single-engine turboprop PC-9.

The sale of the military-capable PC-9 to Chad in 2006 was controversial, but Pilatus and the Swiss government had been assured it was to be registered as a civil aircraft and used only for training.
