Airborne-Flight Training 02.24.22: CFI Changes?, 1500-Hour Rule, United Aviate

Some interesting rumblings are afoot, according to the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE).

A screen grab from a rumored FAA presentation has been making the rounds as an early "pre-decisional proposal." The proposal? Eliminate expirations for flight instructors and simultaneously restrict "exercising the privilege" based on required activity and experience like any other pilot certificate. SAFE notes that it's far too soon for CFI's to celebrate the change, since it will have to go through "a very long official NPRM – comment – process" before making its way to their logbooks. Mesa Air Group CEO Jonathan Ornstein argued before lawmakers earlier this month that the knee-jerk imposition of the 1,500 flight hour requirement for airline pilots has put the country on the back foot compared to others, specifically laying out the tremendous difference in experience demanded of pilots overseas. “It seems crazy that a 300-hour FO can land a Lufthansa A350 into JFK flying over Queens, and a U.S. pilot can’t do the same thing...” United Airlines has seen significant interest in their new flight school, the United Aviate Academy, with over 12,000 student applications over a matter of months. To meet the demand, the school has announced the addition of 25 single engine aircraft to its current fleet, bringing their total to 50. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
