FAA Working To Implement Comprehensive Testing Solution

Notifies Pilots Of Airman Certificate Testing Service (ACTS)

The FAA is in the process of procuring a comprehensive testing solution referred to as The Airman Certificate Testing Service (ACTS), which is a best-practices approach aimed at enhancing the overall quality of FAA Airman Knowledge Testing.

The current FAA systems that support the test development process are nearing the end of their useful life and must be replaced. New technology, additional resources, and industry expertise are being pursued to provide the capability for the FAA to implement much needed changes to the airman knowledge testing process.

This new direction will bring about many changes to the way FAA airman knowledge tests are developed and administered to the aviation community once the contract is awarded.

The agency has established a webpage to keep the pilot community apprised of its progress regarding the ACTS implementation. According to the site:

  • FAA-S-ACS-1, Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe and Powerplant ACS—the estimated publication date for the final ACS is June 2020
  • FAA-S-ACS-11, Airline Transport Pilot ACS—the estimated publication date for the final ACS is October 2018
  • FAA-S-ACS-9, Instructor ACS—the estimated publication date for the final ACS is June 2019
  • FAA-S-ACS-12, Military Competency for Commercial Pilot Certification ACS—the estimated publication date for the final ACS is TBD
  • FAA-S-ACS-15, Private Rotorcraft Pilot (Helicopter & Gyroplane) ACS—the estimated publication date for the final ACS is TBD
