Cape Cod Airport Saved

Town Of Barnstable Will Buy Grass Strip

One of the last grass airstrips still active in Massachusetts will live, thanks to the Cape Cod town of Barnstable (MA). Town Council President Gary Blazis said owners of the property signed documents last week transferring ownership of the 217-acre airport to the town. The Danforth family, owners of the strip, shut it down April 30th, citing insurance costs.

The owners will get $11.2 million, money from the Cape Cod Land Act. Its funds are to be used for recreational purposes. Massachusetts law considers airports eligible for funding under that definition.

The entire town council must still approve the purchase at its September 4th meeting. In operation for some eight decades, 2B1 is the last grass strip on Cape Cod. There's no indication yet when it will be reopened, but Blazis told the Cape Cod Times he hopes it will be run just as it was before.
