Flight Attendants Call For FAA Audit Of Scheduling At Allegiant Air

Union Reports That FAs Have Been Required To Work Over 14 Hours At A Time

The Transport Workers Union (TWU), representing more than 600 flight attendants at Allegiant Air, has asked the FAA for a “complete audit… of the Allegiant Air scheduling, crew rest and fatigue procedures.”

“We’ve had numerous reports from Allegiant flight attendants that they are being required to remain on duty for more than 14 hours, even when a replacement is available,” said TWU International Vice President Thom McDaniel. “We’ve also had complaints that the company is cutting short on required rest periods.”

TWU made the request Tuesday in a letter sent via email to FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta.

“If these reports are true, then Allegiant may not be operating its flights in compliance with Federal regulations,” said McDaniel. “These regulations are in force because flight attendants have critical responsibilities to ensure passenger safety, comfort and convenience on every flight. If flight attendants are overworked and don’t have proper rest, it’s more difficult to deliver the high standard of service that Allegiant passengers have every right to expect.”

A majority of flight attendants at Allegiant Air, a Las Vegas-based discount airline, voted in favor of TWU representation in December 2010.  More than two years later, workers are still negotiating – with the assistance of federal mediators – to achieve a first contract agreement.
