McWherter Resigns As President Of Tailhook Association

Former Blue Angels Boss Under Investigation For Inappropriate Conduct

The embattled former commander of the Blue Angels has stepped down as the president of the Navy's Tailhook Association, an organization that has itself been the focus of controversy in the Navy.

Capt. Gregory McWherter was relieved of duty as the XO of Naval Base Coronado while the Navy investigates allegations of "fostering a culture of sexual harassment, hazing, and lewd behavior" while the Blue's leader. The Navy says it has received several complaints from former Blue Angel's pilots who said he "tolerated and encouraged sexual misconduct," according to a report in the Washington Post.

McWherter submitted his resignation as president of the Tailhook Association on Friday, saying through retired Navy vice admiral Evan Chanik ... the group's chairman ... that he did not want the distractions of the investigation to "inadvertently affect the Tailhook Association in any way, shape, or form."
