CAF Pilot Dies After P-51C Crash

Landed Off-Airport At Wings Of Freedom Show

Don "Pappy" Hinz, an experienced Naval flight instructor and A7E carrier pilot, died Sunday after his P-51C "Razorback" went down off-airport during the Wings of Freedom Air Show in Bay City (WI) the day before.

Hinz, a member of the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, encountered engine failure and was trying to make it back to the runway when his aircraft, the last flying P-51C, was forced down in a nearby field.

Pappy Hinz, 60, joined the Navy in 1965. He was a nuclear submariner before switching to carrier aviation in 1972. He was an A-4 instructor and logged about 140 carrier landings in the A7E.

Don "Pappy" Hinz has gone west. Happy landings, Pappy.
