Breaking News: Freighter Down In Suburban Chicago

At Least Two People On Board At The Time Of The Crash

A business jet operating as a freighter has gone down in the Des Plaines River in suburban Chicago after being cleared to land at Chicago Executive Airport.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the aircraft, which was registered to Royal Air Freight of Waterford, Michigan, or what might have gone wrong. Divers and firefighters had been called to the accident scene in an effort to reach the plane.

Airport spokeswoman Laura Witlox told the Associated Press that the plane went down about 1400 local time. FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said in a recorded phone message that a pilot and co-pilot were believed to be on board.  It was unknown if there was anyone else on the plane.

Pictures posted on a local radio station website showed pieces of an extensively damaged aircraft on the banks of the river. The plane was reportedly manufactured in 1977.
