Airshow Pilot Dan Buchanan Perishes While Performing in Idaho

Unique Hang Glider Airshow Routine Was A Hit For Decades

ANN has received conformation of the tragic loss of Airshow Pilot Dan Buchanan in an Airshow accident that occurred while performing in a routine at the Gunfighter Skies Air & Space Celebration at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

Details are minimal, at the moment, though one published description noted that his glider descended sharply to impact near the runway following his release from a winch tow to an undisclosed altitude. The accident occurred approximately 1330 local time. Local rescue operations were quick to the scene, airlifted Dan to nearby medical facilities, whereupon it was reported that he passed away from his injuries.

Dan had been a part of the Airshow community for nearly 30 years and claimed quick respect for his work ethic and professionalism. He suffered a severe accident in 1981, that left him in a wheelchair, in a hang glider crash that he admitted should not have happened because he shouldn't have been flying in the severe weather conditions at the time.

Accruing thousands of hours in regular powered aircraft as well as certified gliders and hang gliders, Dan flew his first Airshow in 1981 and went on to undertake 100s of performances the award of both the The Art Scholl Award for Showmanship and The Bill Barber Award for Showmanship.

Dan was a delight to work with, a great addition to many an Airshow after-party, and a tireless advocate for aviation. He will be missed... ANN sends our prayers and thoughts to his friends and family.

More details to follow when confirmed and available.
