Fulton Police Prove Utility of Cop Drones with SAR Success

DJI Matrice to the Rescue as Department Validates Program Funding

A New York police department highlighted the usefulness of one of its FLIR-equipped UAVs with the rescue of a missing 'vulnerable person', finding them safe and sound before nightfall.

Vulnerable persons (generally a code for those with mental health or age-related impairments) can prove a difficult issue for worried families, sometimes able to wander off and lose themselves in the surrounding area with little indication beforehand. The Fulton PD was notified of one such missing person, getting the report at 18:30. In the chilly night air of New York state, that could be quite dangerous to the aged, particularly when they no longer have the presence of mind to adequately prepare themselves or survive on their own.

Stuck in a semirural wooded area, police quickly busted out their DJI Matrice 30 to begin the search & rescue mission. The drone went on station at 19:50, canvassing nearby terrain and forestry with its infrared camera. Only 22 minutes later, the missing person was spied walking along railroad tracks, outside visibility near a road or trail.

The target was encountered by police and brought back to family, a little worn out but none the worse for wear. "This successful recovery effort underscores the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technology for the safety of our community and officers," said Fulton Police Deputy Chief Chris Dempsey.
