When Parts Aren’t Parts But An Engine

Superior Air Parts Certifies 'Bolt On' 180 HP Mill For 172s

Superior Air Parts has created a certified 180 hp engine that is a “bolt on” for the Cessna 172.  Scott Hayes, V.P of Sales and Marketing announced Monday at Air Venture that it is within weeks of obtaining an STC allowing its Vantage Engine to be placed on Cessna 172s.  So what?  The cost!  Superior will sell a brand new engine with normal accessories for less than $25,000, the price of an overhaul.  Mr. Hayes emphasized that for this price, one receives a new engine with all new parts.

Among the advantages of the Vantage are: Balanced Oil Crankcase for better overall lubrication of the camshaft and crankshaft, proprietary Electro Slag Remelt (ESR) Crankshaft which produces a stronger base metal resulting in a stronger crankshaft and high-flow sump delivers more air to all four cylinders.  This engine takes advantage of the latest technology available for certified reciprocating engines.

This is the latest in the fast growing company (20%/yr.) that prides itself on being lean and efficient.  Superior claims to have the highest ratio of degreed engineers to employees in the airplane industry.  Because of its lower corporate overhead, it can design and bring to market parts and engines more efficiently than those with large bureaucratic overhead.

The Vantage engine is a follow on of the experimental Superior XP engine.  The XP can burn unleaded gasoline but certification costs are currently preventing the Vantage from being approved for avgas.
