Kentucky Aviation Museum Exhibit Features Twin-Boom Aircraft

Includes P-38 Lightning 'Glacier Girl'

The Aviation Museum of Kentucky in Lexington has opened an exhibit that focuses on "Twin Boom" aircraft, including a P-38 Lighting with strong Kentucky connections that was lost on a ferry flight to Europe in 1942.

"Glacier Girl" was en route to Europe during the war when it encountered bad weather and was forced to make an off-airport landing on an ice sheet in Greenland. It was not recoverable at the time of the accident, and was eventually covered by ice and snow. It lay entombed in the ice until it was recovered in 1992 and restored to airworthy condition.

Aviation Museum of Kentucky official Marty Schadler told television station WYMT that when Kentucky businessman Roy Shoffner's recovery team reached the airplane, it was basically brand new. But they had to dig through 260 feet of ice to get to her.

The exhibition will be open at the museum until the end of July.
