Airborne 09.12.18: Flying Car Record, 1st Solo Emergency, Former Spitfire Pilot

Also: Helicopter Online Ground School, Pro Line Fusion, New Air Traffic Control Tower, Junior ROTC Cadet

Flying car manufacturer Samson Sky just received Reservation Position number 800, breaking records with customers in 24 countries, and 46 out of 50 states in the US. Reportedly, California currently has the largest contingent of owners, followed by Florida and Texas.

The Switchblade is capable of flying up to 165 knots. Shown in complete form for the first time last month at AirVenture, the Switchblade drew heavy crowds of flight enthusiasts. A 17-year-old student pilot making her first solo executed a successful emergency landing after the right main landing gear came off her Piper PA-28, during Maggie Taraska's takeoff from Beverly Airport Sunday afternoon. While Taraska was solo, she was not alone in her efforts to get the airplane back safely. Air Traffic Controllers and her instructor talked her through the situation, which ended with a successful emergency landing. “You’re doing a great job flying the airplane. We’re going to take our time. We got plenty of time. You’ve got plenty of fuel. We’ve got plenty of daylight. You always heard me say go back to basics. So we’re going to work the basics,” her instructor told her over the radio. By any estimation, 99-year-old Archie McInnes, who lives near Cambridge, England, is a war hero. He flew for the RAF during WWII, becoming an ace while fighting off Hitler's Luftwaffe during the war. He recently got to fly again, possibly for the final time, in a refurbished Spitfire in the skies over Kent. McInnes was a passenger this time, but on his wing was a Hurricane aircraft like the one he flew during the war. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
