Pakistan's AF Chief Dies in Crash

Mushaf Ali Mir, 16 Others Perish

We've gotten a report that the chief of Pakistan's Air Force, 57-year-old Mushaf Ali Mir, was killed, along with two vice Air Marshals, five other Air Force officials, eight crew... and his wife.

The Fokker 27 was 16 miles away, and approaching the Kohat Air Base, which itself is less than 50 miles from Afghanistan, when the tower lost contact, in fog.

Mir was on an inspection tour of the training base, located in a population center of roughly 100,000, in mountains. He had left Islamabad earlier in the day.

Mir had joined the Air Force in 1967, and saw action as a fighter pilot in the war against India in 1971. He took over the Air Force in late 2000.

The Mirs leave two sons and a daughter, aged 18 to 28.
