L-39 Down In Maryland

Pilot Reported Killed

An Aero-Vodochody L-39 jet trainer based at Martin State Airport (MD) went down near Forest Hill (MD) Sunday, killing the sole occupant on board. The identity of the pilot has not yet been released.

Rich Gardiner, a member of the Bel Air (MD) Volunteer Fire Dept., said the Czech-made jet trainer clipped the top of a three-story house as it descended. Witnesses said the plane was flying erratically, low to the ground, before it fell from the sky. Witnesses say the aircraft nosed straight into the ground. The impact was followed by a plume of smoke, they said.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
