TFRs In Place For GOP, Democratic Nominating Conventions

Cleveland TFR Goes Into Effect Sunday For Republican Event

The FAA has announced Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) over both Cleveland and Philadelphia that will be in place during the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions.

The GOP convention begins Sunday in Cleveland. The TFR will be in place from 1800 EDT Sunday through 0300 EDT Friday, July 22. There are three separate rings for the TFR, all centered on the DRYER VOR/DME (DJB) 074 degree radial at 22.9 nautical miles. The outermost ring extends out 30 nautical miles, a second ring extends out 10 nautical miles, while the innermost ring extends out 3 nautical miles.

Over the course of the week, the airspace restrictions will change, and the list is lengthy. Pilots are strongly advised to check NOTAMS for their route of flight before flying in or near Cleveland next week.

The Democratic convention begins July 25 in Philadelphia, and the TFR for that event will go into effect at 1000 EDT on July 25 and expire on July 29 at 0100.

The TFR for the Democratic convention will be centered on the WOODSTOWN VORTAC (OOD) 031 degree radial at 17 nautical miles. It also involves concentric rings of 30, 10, and 3 nautical miles. While the Philadelphia TFR does not change like the Cleveland TFR does, pilots are still reminded that the conditions of a TFR can change with little or no notice, and they are again strongly advised to check NOTAMS prior to flight, and get updates during their flights during the convention.

You wouldn't want to notice an F-16 off your wing, now would you.

The usual restrictions for such VIP TFRs apply. Check the links below for a list of restrictions and contact information.
