Storm Damages Several Airplanes In Oklahoma

Three Destroyed At Stillwater Regional Airport Friday Morning

Three airplanes were destroyed and two others damaged early Friday morning when a storm ripped through Stillwater, OK Regional Airport. All of the planes belonged to the Oklahoma State University aviation program.

The Stillwater News Press reports that winds associated with the storm topped 70 miles per hour. One of the Cessna 172s broke free of its tiedown chains and tumbled across the ramp, damaging four other airplanes before coming to rest about 50 feet from where it started.

Lance Fortney, the flight program manager for OSU, said that it appears that at least two of the airplanes are total losses, and a third may be as well ... but he stressed that he is a pilot, not a mechanic.

Fortney estimated that damage could be in excess of $1 million, given that a new Cessna 172 runs in the neighborhood of $350,000.

A similar weather event in 2011 damaged three Cessna 152s, according to the report.
