NTSB Needs Accident Investigators In Alaska

Two Positions Open Following Staff Departures

There are two openings for NTSB accident investigators in Alaska for positions left vacant by the departure of two of the state's four investigators.

The two departing investigators will be moving to different offices in Denver and Georgia, according to a report from The Alaska Dispatch News. The openings were announced last Monday by the NTSB's Alaska chief Clint Johnson.

Openings in Alaska are rare, Johnson said, and they normally get about 120 applications for each position. He said they have already begun to sift through the applications that have been received.

There have been relatively few accidents in Alaska this year. Johnson said there have been 77 accidents of which 10 accounted for 22 fatalities. Nearly half of the fatalities came in one accident in June involving a DHC-3 Otter which impacted a rock face in the Misty Fjords National Monument. That accident fatally injured the pilot and eight passengers from a cruise ship who had booked the sightseeing flight.

The jobs are posted on the federal jobs website. The Aviation Accident Investigator position is open through January 11, while the Air Safety Investigator position is open until January 13.
