FAA Approves Waiver for sUAS Systems at Michigan Test Site

Permits Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations

uAvionix and Unmanned Vehicle Technologies (UVT) announced jointly that the FAA has granted UVT a waiver to operate its small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) at its Michigan test site.

The waiver permits BVLOS operations without the need for visual observers (VOs), made possible through the integration of the uAvionix Casia G ground-based detect-and-avoid (DAA) system which provides comprehensive airspace awareness to ensure safe drone operation beyond the PIC’s visual range.

The testing allowed by the waiver will significantly advance operational capabilities for UVT, holding the promise of new opportunities for remote enterprise applications.

A crucial element in securing the waiver is the Casia G system by uAvionix. It is an advanced DAA system that is designed to detect and avoid other aircraft in proximity to the drone being operated by the PIC. The technology, highlighted in a previous edition of Propwash, was demonstrated with UVT’s customer, the Oswego City Police Department’s Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program.

A broader trend seems to be emerging through the growing number of BVLOS waivers being secured by commercial entities and public safety organizations. The approvals highlight the critical role of advanced technology such as Casia G to ensure safe and efficient operation of UASes.

Vice President of Remote Operations at UVT, Matthew Rybar said, “We are thrilled to have received this waiver from the FAA, which validates our commitment to safety and innovation in the UAS industry. The Casia G system from uAvionix is a game-changer, allowing us to expand our operational capabilities and explore new applications for our technology.”

Jon Damush, CEO of uAvionix commented, “The success of our technology in securing BVLOS waivers for both UVT and the Oswego City Police Department is a testament to its reliability and effectiveness. We anticipate that more companies and departments will follow suit, leveraging the capabilities of Casia G to enhance their UAS operations.”
