Port Columbus Airport Renamed For John Glenn

First American To Orbit The Earth Will Soon Turn 95 Years Old

In a ceremony held Tuesday, Port Columbus Airport was renamed John Glenn Columbus International Airport in honor of the first American to orbit the Earth.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Glenn, an Ohio native, called the recognition an unexpected honor. In his remarks at the ceremony, he remembered asking his parents to stop at the airport so that he could watch the airplanes come and go.

Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) signed legislation renaming the airport two weeks ago, and the name change will become official in September. But the first sign with Glenn's name has already been revealed over a new, large video terminal at the center of the ticketing lobby of the airport.

Glenn kept a private aircraft at Lane Aviation at the airport for decades, only giving up flying his own airplane when he turned 90.
